Chapter Nine

Tylney Hall

In the early 1960s the family moved once more, to Rotherwick in rural Hampshire, where Emlyn took up a teaching post at Tylney Hall School. There he did something that says as much about him as any newspaper cutting: he gave away almost everything he had ever won in the game, his international caps, his medals, to boys at the school, as rewards when they showed real improvement in their learning. Only one small framed display of caps and medals survives in the family today. Everything else, he gave to someone who needed it more than a shelf did. It was, the family thinks, the same kind of quiet generosity a teacher had once shown him, buying a barefoot boy his first pair of rugby boots.

What remains: caps and badges including a 1933 Ashes Test badge, a 1936 touring cap, a 1937 Test cap, and a Regional Coach badge. Everything else went to his pupils.
